The river Chiers borders the municipality of Rouvroy near Torgny.
Torgny is the southernmost village in Belgium, and its Provençal atmosphere is boosted by the vineyards, the red-tiled roofs of the eighteenth and nineteenth-century houses, the traditional communal wash-house and the series of roadside crosses around the village. It offers a variety of different types of accommodation, a bistro and a restaurant serving local specialities, and makes an excellent base for exploring the beautiful countryside on both sides of the French border.
The vineyard of Torgny
In Belgium, the wine production comes back from the Roman time and widely stretched at the 10th century. In Torgny, archives relate that wine was lacking in 1698. After a slow decline, the association ?Ardenne & Gaume? decided to recreate a vineyard in about 1955 and to bring back folklore and the tradition linked to vine culture.
The agronomic Institute of Gembloux helped for the realization of this plan. It was an old lady nicknamed ?la Zolette? who gave up her lands. Grapes variety planted there are: l?Auxerrois, Pinot noir, Pinot blanc and Pinot Chardonnay.
The current plantations should provide more than five thousands litres of wine a year and cover about one hectare and a half of ground.
At present there are two vineyards in Torgny: « Poirier du loup » and « Clos de l'épinette »
