The "Sacred Way" was the only road between thefront line at Verdun and Bar-le-Due in the rear. As such, it was a vital logistical corridor. For ten months, almost 2,400,000 men and thousands of tonnes of munitions and equipment passed along it, day and night.
It was the author Maurice Barres who named it the "Sacred Way". Nowadays, the RD1916 road is lined with commemorative stones set out every kilometer along its course. The stones are topped with a soldier's helmet. Sacred Way monument and memorial at the hamlet of Moulin-Brule.
